Carolina Week Testimonial: As a freshman, I remember flipping through the television set in my dorm room and seeing a "Carolina Week" newscast. It was anchored by the talented duo Tim Nelson and Brigida Mack. I was impressed by how the show was student-run, yet had the professionalism of a small market station. I jumped at the first chance to be a reporter for the newscast, covering a wide range of events including Clay Aiken's CD release party. Guess who I ran into there? Tim Nelson, who had already made a huge market jump to WTVD in Durham. I also contributed a National Guard story to our newscast, which won a Student Emmy! Moments like these showed me I was really a part of something special. During my junior year, I decided to audition for an anchor spot, and was ecstatic to get the co-anchor chair on Mondays with Courtney Robinson. Courtney, too, has gone onto to do quite well as a reporter in Virginia. During commencement, I realized my experiences with Carolina Week and other student-run media had really paid off. I was awarded the Charles Kuralt Fellowship in International Broadcasting and spent two wonderful years working for the Voice of America in Washington, D.C. I would recommend the CW experience to anyone who is serious about a career in journalism. Dr. Tuggle and the staff provide a real-life opportunity that helps you build integrity as a journalist, time management, strong voice and diction skills and the ability to interact and connect with all types of people.
