Bio: Dr. T. enjoyed a 16-year career in local television news before returning to the campus setting to educate and train a new wave of broadcast journalists. He spent 11 years at WFLA-TV, the NBC affiliate in Tampa/St. Petersburg, the nation's 13th largest media market. He has held many newsroom titles, but spent most of his career as a reporter/producer. He covered six Super Bowls, and was in charge of programming ranging from daily segments to hour-long taped specials to two-hour live event coverage, involving a crew of 70 and nine different remote sites, including two moving vehicles and a helicopter. His forte as a teacher is developing storytellers – journalists who can use the language and all of the tools available to them to turn out memorable broadcast reports.

He is the lead author of the Broadcast News Handbook about writing, reporting, and producing for television news. The text is in use in more than 170 colleges and universities. He is also co-editor of Electronic News, the journal of the RTVJ division of AEJMC.
