Jonathan OhPrimary function: Carolina Week Anchor, Duke Bureau Chief Bio: Jonathan Oh is an anchor for Carolina Week, UNC's award-winning student-run television news program. He anchors the Monday edition of the broadcast with Carly Swain. Jonathan also heads the Duke Bureau, the news-gathering arm for Carolina Week based out of Duke University. This is his fourth semester with the program. Jonathan began his work with Carolina Week/Carolina Connection in the Fall of 2006 as a weather forecaster. Before his duties at the UNC broadcasts, he served as News Director for Cable 13, Duke University's student-run television station. Jonathan's interest in television began in 1994, when tornadoes struck his hometown of Lexington, South Carolina, one of them being less than two miles from his house. While completely scared out of his wits, he was awed by the power of the weather. His inspiration into broadcast meteorology was then-WIS Chief Meteorologist Jim Gandy, who was instrumental in delivering up-to-the-minute forecasts and information on evacuations during the storm. Jonathan also considers the late Peter Jennings as his role model for broadcast journalism. His first chance at television came the next year in 1995, when he served as the Friday weather anchor for his elementary school's television news program. From there, his interest took him to various positions at his high school television news program before attending college at Duke University and becoming a part of the news operations at Cable 13. Jonathan also serves as a fill-in weather forecaster for WIS TV 10 in Columbia, South Carolina. Jonathan writes about his philosophy on news: "The most important part is the people. Without people, the news is really worthless. It is essential to always keep the focus centered on the world around us. I thank you for allowing me to come into your homes, dorm rooms, wherever you are. Feel free to let me know about your thoughts on the world and about the broadcast at anytime." Jonathan is a student member of the National Broadcasting Society, the RTNDAC (Radio and Television News Directors Association of the Carolinas), the American Meteorological Society, and the National Weather Association. He enjoys video production, music, Church, and sports, especially ultimate frisbee, beach volleyball, and martial arts. He hopes to go into broadcasting after he graduates and looks forward to serving you wherever you are. |
