Why organic?
The organic food movement tries to cut back on practices that harm
the environment like
pesticide use, large-scale meat production, and the burning of fossil
fuels. It's also
meant to protect the health and rights of all farmers - in every
country.
Does food production really hurt anything? Pesticides pollute the environment,
but also
cause kidney failure in farmers.
Shipping long distances burns fossil fuels, also a pollutant.
Hog waste from mass production has serious effects on the environment,
especially here in
North Carolina. Meat raised with the use of antibiotics, growth
hormones, and animal
by-products in its feed is less sustainable.
The unsanitary conditions of cattle and chicken production has
contributed to Mad Cow
Disease (BSE) and the Avian Bird Flu.
