Delivers 'State of the University'
By Justin Smith
Chancellor James Moeser, speaking before a
packed Great Hall during his State of the University
address, set a goal of securing $1 billion is
external research funding by 2015.
“This is a challenge that the faculty and our campus community can and
should embrace,” Moeser said. “It will not be easy, but we can do
it.”
The chancellor also used the annual address
to look back at promises made during past
speeches.
Last year, Moeser called for the creation
of a task force to examine the university’s
service to the state. Wednesday he shared the committee’s recommendations
in three key areas:
Education
“Our top priority is to increasing the number of K-12 science and math
teachers. This will require much closer collaborations between the School of
Education and the College of Arts and Sciences,” Moeser said.
Health Care
“Our number one strategy is to expand the professional workforce available
to citizens. We will support enrollment increases in dentistry, medicine, nursing,
pharmacy, public health and social work,” Moeser said.
Economic Development
“We envision a management academy for fledgling high-growth companies and
a program to help state and local leaders build sustainable economies,” Moeser
said.
