Inn Workers Under Review
By Justin Smith
A Chapel Hill landmark might have to fire
more than ten percent of its workers after discrepancies
were found in federal records.
The Social Security Administration is reviewing
37 employees at the Carolina Inn because
their names do not match the social security
numbers they gave hotel
administrators.
According to a Carolina Inn spokesman, the
employees work in housekeeping and food
and beverage services.
The hotel's manager worries the workers might be illegal immigrants who made
up social security numbers.
So far, no one has been fired.
The spokesman added that hotel guests should
not feel any effects from the review.
The university owns The Carolina Inn and Aramark
operates it.
Carolina Week has learned that Social Security
officials have also reviewed some Aramark
employees working for Carolina Dinning Services.
The university's director of auxiliary services,
Mike Freeman says he learned of the discrepancies
more than a month ago.
He believes questions still remain about
the social security numbers of only "a
few" employees.
