| Pedestrian
Citation Program Still In Effect
By Rachel McDaniel
Do you fear for your life when crossing
the street on campus?
In March 2006, the Department of Public Safety
kicked off its "Yield to
Heels" program, raising awareness about pedestrian safety.
During the event, university police officers
weren't hesitant to put a stop to jaywalking.
Officers gave citations costing up to $135
for those who didn't use crosswalks properly.
Randy Young, spokesman for the DPS, says the "Yield
to Heels" program
never really stopped.
“This fall we have already started handing
out citations. We did not go through a warning
phase. We handed out citations beginning with
the beginning
of classes here on campus,” he said.
"Yield to Heels" will kick off another program in the fall and spring
to inform freshmen about pedestrian safety and how to avoid those expensive citations.
