| Disc
Golf Club Increasing in Poplarity
By Claire Stackhouse
Senior Garrett Davis plays disc
golf, a sport that's been around since the 70s,
but has
recently gained popularity here on campus.
"Coming to Chapel Hill last year...I started
picking up the game a little bit and then I
just discovered this course which is a major
asset to the University in terms of recreation
and opportunity for students," said
Garrett.
The President of Carolina's Disc Golf Club,
Andrew George says, once a secret, UNC's disc
golf club now boasts more than 50 members.
"People are learning about how cool this
course is," said George.
So, what’s so great about disc golf?
"I really enjoy the control aspect of
the sport just like in regular golf so it’s
similar to that," said Garrett.
The sport is very similar to golf, there are
long-range shots, and there are puts.
The only difference is, you use discs instead
of clubs.
UNC Director of Campus Recreation Marty
Pomerantz says there's another major
difference.
"It's really good exercise. You never
take a cart, you always walk the course," said
Pomerantz.
Garrett agrees.
"I also enjoy the exercising
too. You come out walk around; sometimes you
can run between holes,” he said.
Both men say it's not a sport you have to be
able to pick-up right away in order to have
fun.
"It can be a lot of fun no matter what
level you’re at,” said Pomerantz.
But, some do have more skill than others.
Disc Club member Matt Smith just placed 11th
in the World Disc Golf Tournament.
