Quilt artist tells stories with fabric
By Angela Watson

That old quilt your grandmother made might be a work of art. However, it is unlikely that the quilt on your bed will be displayed in an art gallery.

It took more than ten years to create the quilts that are now on display in the Stone Center.

Heather Williams, the artist who made the quilts, wanted to portray different aspects of Black culture through fabric, because she said she believes that drawings or photographs would not depict the culture in the same way.

“I love it. It feels good to me and I also find that I'm able to do things on fabric that I wouldn't be able to do on paper,” said Williams.

Williams’ quilts are beautiful works of art, but they also serve a greater purpose. Each quilt tells a story. It could be a story about a gardener or a story about a mother and daughter. Through the use of color and texture, the quilts tell a story that you will not find in history books.
