| Teach
for America Recruiters Hit UNC Campus
By Janelle Alissa Henry
UNC students gathered
in Hamilton on Tuesday night to learn about
how to apply for a position with Teach for America.
Recruiters have been combing universities looking
for the next crop of teachers to plant in 25
urban and rural regions across the United States.
Recruits are hired for a minimum of two years
and in that time they will complete intense
on-the-job training and take certification
courses at night. Some teachers choose to stay
with
the program longer while others go on to graduate
or law school, and some enter the private
sector. Senior Travis Starkey said that the challenge
of the program attracted him.
“After
college I’m not sure what I want to
do, but I do enjoy working with children
and I want an
experience that’s going to stretch
me pretty good and this seems like an excellent
way to do that,” Starkey said.
Early applicants are more likely to get one
of your top three school choices. The first
deadline for resumes and essays is on Saturday
at midnight. For more details on how to
apply, go to www.teachforamerica.org.
