Bollards Make Students Nervous
By Jessica Floyd
An SUV was parked right in between Wilson
Library and the Undergraduate Library.
Many students were wondering how did it
got there? It drove through the bollards
in between the libraries. One bollard was
even left down which could mean more cars
could access campus. This area is heavily
populated and only a few feet away from
the hub of campus.
Jenna Bridger has a suggestion for making
sure the bollards stay up.
"They should unlock them when they
get to them and immediately turn around
and lock them back after they've gone over
it go through them."
The vehicle did have a proper permit.
But it doesn't change the fact that because
the bollard was left down the safety of
students was put at risk.
Diane Dodge says she parked here to make
a delivery but she feels uneasy about having
a vehicle so close to students.
"Every time I pull up on that curb,
I try to go real slow. It's in my mind
that people are going to think I'm going
to mow these people down. So I try to go
very, very slow…just creeping and
look out the window and make eye contact."
Jim Alty is the director of Facility Services
and says he realizes that when the bollards
are down students feel uneasy.
"One of the areas we're looking at
is putting up so signage or looking at
some alternative ways of putting stickers
on the bollards themselves that might allow
the students to notify us if they notice
it's down."
I called the Facility Service number Alty
gave me to report that the bollard was
down. At first the operator didn't even
know what I was talking about. But within
an hour it was back up.
If you see a bollard down and would like
to report it call (919)962-3456.
