Registration Subgroups Confuse Students
By Angela Watson
In the past, registration
has been a source of frustration for some
students, but a new system has changed
the process by randomly assigning students
to four subgroups which determine when
they can register for classes.
Some students
like, Christina Clair, a senior at UNC,
favor the old system.
"I
don't know if I really like this new
registration system because they just randomly
assign
you to a certain time slot and I don't
really think that's fair," Clair
said.
In the old system, class and seniority
were the only factors that determined
when students could sign up for classes.
As
a result, thousands of students logged
online to register at the same time
which caused the system to freeze
and prevent
other students from logging on; but
with the new system, this problem
is alleviated.
Students are divided into 4 subgroups
and randomized within the group
which determines
which 15 minute slot they will
have to sign up for classes on registration
day.
Alice Poehls, the University Registrar,
says it was time for a change
after receiving many email complains
about the previous
system.
"The
system that we used of putting
all students in at the
same time was causing frustration
for students. I was inundated
with complaints because
students perceived that the
system was broken," Poehls said.
However, administrators hope
that the new system will
prevent, or
at least
decrease,
the amount registration nightmares
that many UNC students like
Clair have experienced.
" I was only signed up for like 3
or 6 hours and then I had to just randomly
add a bunch of classes at the end so that was kind of disappointing,
I didn't really get anything I wanted," Clair
said.
So, set your alarms if you're registering
early Saturday morning and see how
you like the new registration system.
