Race Relations Week Kicks Off With Forums
By Kate Schoen

The goal of Race Relations Week is to promote awareness and educate people about racial
issues.

Organizers believe that it's full filled this goal thus far.

Monday two forums kicked off the Week.

In "Immigration and the American Identity" a panel of experts discussed various immigration topics including border issues.

In "The Color of Media Coverage" panel journalists discussed the importance of media in
shaping the way people view race.

And Tuesday night several people attended a discussion about stereotypes of race- based sexual exploitation.

Organizer Adrienne Allen says the panels have addressed the tough issues.

"We have a lot of really hard-hitting events this week that may make people a little uncomfortable, and we break the boundaries past political correctness just to get these statements out there."

There are lots of other activities coming up. Thursday night the President of the North Carolina N-A-A-C-P will give the key-note address for the Week.

And Friday night a benefit at Memorial Hall WILL support the Habitat for Humanity.
