| Carolina
a 'New Ivy"
By Claire Stackhouse
Carolina is one of the "new Ivies" according to the 2007 Newsweek and
Kaplan "How to Get into College Guide."
The guide named the University as one of the
25 schools that have benefited from the recent
boom of top students applying to college.
Director of Admissions, Stephen Farmer says
he doesn't expect the recognition to cause a
big increase in the number of students who apply
to Carolina.
“Students choose what school they want
to attend based on several things, not just
what they read in Newsweek,” said Farmer.
Farmer also says that the University is more
concerned with doing a good job than getting
accolades.
"Our approach has been that if we do our
work responsibly, if we act on behalf of the
University with vision, the other things, including
ratings and outside recognition will fall into
place," said Farmer.
In addition to the Newsweek recognition, for
the sixth year in a row, U-S News World Report
has named Carolina the fifth best public University
in the country.
