Tuition Hike
by Amanda Iler

Tuition might be going up again, but maybe not for everybody. The UNC Board of Trustees is considering a tuition increase for out-of-state students.

Adam Bensimhon is a freshman from Pennsylvania. He could have been facing an extra $6,000 in tuition during the course of his final three years here. Even though it looks like the figure might not be as high now, he said raising tuition only for out-of-state students isn't fair.

"I don't know why they're increasing just ours, since we have a lesser population at the school. I think they should also raise in-state tuition too, and if that mean less in-state students, so be it," Bensimhon said.

The BOT's original idea had out-of-state tuition going up $2,000 a year for three years, to put UNC Chapel Hill's charges in line with other peer institutions. Tuesday, Chancellor James Moeser told Student Congress a $3,600 increase spread over three years would put Carolina's out-of-state tuition in line with the other universities.
