After the Heels finished at or near the bottom of every defensive category in football last season, head coach John Bunting needed a change.

In a strange twist, Bunting found it in a former Duke player and assistant coach.

John Gutekunst was named Tar Heels defensive coordinator Tuesday.

He played defensive back for Duke in the mid 1960s and started his coaching career after that.

Most recently, Gutekunst served as defensive backs coach at South Carolina for five seasons.
