IFC Shelter Looking for New Home
by Ross Weidner

Snow and the falling temperatures have the homeless searching for a warm place to sleep. Some Chapel Hill residents are worried about where the homeless will be spending their nights.

The Inter-Faith Council homeless shelter on Rosemary Street is looking for a new, larger place to call home.
But at last week's town council meeting, 20 residents of Legion Road entered a petition trying to block the IFC from moving the shelter to their neighborhood.

Chris Moran, executive director of the IFC, says his organization is used to opposition from people who aren't comfortable with the idea of a homeless shelter in their neighborhood.

“Anything that looks different is going to seem scary to some people,” Moran said. “Our job is really to help as many people as we possibly can [learn] about who homeless individuals are—that they're just like you and me.”

The town-owned land on Legion Road is next to the Chapel Hill Memorial Cemetery.
