Deacons Snap Heels Streak
by Tyree Barnette
The men's basketball team has been hammering
opponents of late in the cozy confines of
the Smith Center, but it met its match in
fourth-ranked Wake Forest.
Wake Forest came ready for the Tar Heels as pre-season player of the year Chris
Paul won the battle of all ACC point guard against Raymond Felton.
Senior Jawad Williams came out firing, but foul trouble, including a puzzling
double-foul on Rashad McCants and Trent Strickland, soon put the Heels on ice.
The Deacons buried the Tar Heels from the foul line, making 32 of 32 from the
line, an ACC record.
With Felton still hurting and McCants in foul trouble most of the second half,
Wake Forest was able to hang on and hand UNC its first loss in 14 games.
Coach Roy Williams said the Tar Heels just couldn't manage to build any momentum
against the Deacs.
“The way you make runs is that you are able to score and then you gotta
get some stops," Williams said. "And part of gettin' stops if you've
fouled them is they gotta help ya a lil' bit and miss free throws. And they didn't
get stops and when we did foul'em, they made their free throws”.
The men face Clemson in Clemson, S.C. on Jan. 19 at 9 p.m.
