Organizations Celebrate Martin Luther King Jr.
by Lauren Cox

Several organizations hosted a variety of free programs and cultural activities to honor the accomplishments and legacy of Martin Luther King Jr.

Scores of people gathered Friday at the Public Works Department's seventh annual celebration of the civil rights leader. The program opened with a prayer and scripture reading, which was followed by entertainment from the Eboni dancers, a group of local girls.

The celebration continued with a gospel ensemble singing hymns and concluded with everyone singing the National Negro hymn. The Chapel Hill Police Department's Valerie Foushee was the keynote speaker. She enjoyed having the opportunity to speak to such a diverse group of individuals.

“Town employees can come together without fear to honor a great American and have everybody be a part of it—blacks, whites, old, young—you name it we're all here,” said Foushee.

UNC-CH will hold a candlelight vigil and procession in memory of King Thursday at 6:30 p.m.
