Receives Mitchell Scholarship
by Vanessa Crowl
North Carolina native Richard Waters is
one of this year’s recipients for the
George J. Mitchell Scholarship. Waters was
one of 12 students selected nationwide to
study abroad. The award supports one year
of graduate study in Ireland and Northern
Ireland.
Waters’ strong presence abroad volunteering
in hospitals helped catch the eye of the
scholarship selection committee. He said
he feels the scholarship will be a boost
when he starts working toward a master’s
degree in applied science.
“[This program] will open my scientific
horizons, prepare me for medical school and
for any sort of research that I’d like
to do in the future,” said Waters.
Waters expressed interest in researching
infectious diseases and practicing medicine
in underprivileged areas such as Latin America.
He is the second Mitchell Scholar from UNC-CH
since the program began in 1998. Carolina
alumna Joanna Pearson received the honor
in 2003.
