Landmine Hosts Minesweep 2005
by Sean Maroney
The new student group Project Landmine
has wasted no time getting the message out.
The group hosted Minesweep 2005 in the Great
Hall last Monday evening.
More than 150 students attended the benefit concert featuring performances
by campus groups. The event is part of Project Landmine’s ongoing effort to raise awareness
about landmines around the globe.
Guest speaker Thomas Vajda said he’s glad students realize the importance
of this issue.
“ It affects close to 60 countries around the world with an estimated total
of perhaps 50 to 60 million landmines still in places around the world,” said
Vajda. “Many people don’t know about the severity of the problem.”
Project Landmine raised $600. Half will be going to UNC-CH’s tsunami
relief efforts. The other half will be going to the United Nation’s Adopt-a-Minefield
program for de-mining in Southeast Asia.
