Speak Up about Proposed Tuition Hikes
by Elizabeth Crumpler
The Board of Trustees will decide next week
if tuition at UNC-CH will rise once again
and if so, by how much.
Student Body President Matt Calabria hosted
a forum Monday night for students to voice
their opinions about the proposed tuition
hikes. Calabria presented the three plans
the board is considering, then opened the
floor
for student questions and discussion. Out-of-state
students voiced their concerns loudest, expressing
frustration that they
will bear the brunt of the tuition increase.
Associate Vice Provost and Admissions Director
Jerry Lucido fielded students’ questions.
He wants out-of-state students to know they
are not merely a commodity, despite the tuition
gap.
“The University places great value
in the presence of out-of-state students
here for all they bring, and one of the things
that’s an unfortunate by-product of
the tuition discussion is you see the disparity
in out-of-state tuition compared to in-state
tuition,” Lucido said.
Lucido and Calabria urge students to continue
to voice their opinions at the Board of Trustees
meetings next week. Students may attend any
of the meetings on the schedule provided
below.
