Y Getting Makeover
by Lindsey Ellerson
Since 1904, the Campus Y has been a place
for students to socialize, read and get involved
in the community. Soon, it will be more than
that. Come late May, the renovation of the
Campus Y will begin - a move some say is
long overdue.
The building is severely deteriorating,
preventing students and faculty from using
the Y to its optimum capacity. On the second
floor alone, there are six rooms that are
not used because of sagging ceiling tiles,
peeling paint and holes in the floor. Director of the Campus Y, Virginia Carson,
says the renovation will create more space
for the University, as well as increase student
activity.
“It’s not fixing up the building
for the sake of having a landmark,” says
Carson. “It’s for the ability
of students to do all the things that they
want to do.”
After Commencement, these corroding rooms
will begin the transformation into classrooms,
a faculty lounge and an office for the new
executive director of the arts. During the
12-month refurbishing process, the Campus
Y will move into the Student Union.
