Votes for Tuition Hikes
by Vida Awumey
The cost of going to University of North
Carolina at Chapel Hill has increased once
again, despite appeals from students. On
Thursday, the Board of Trustees voted to
raise in-state tuition by $200 and out-of-state
tuition by $950 for next school year. Student Body President Matt Calabria co-chaired the Tuition Task Force and
tried unsuccessfully to delay the vote.
The Task Force originally proposed a $250 increase for residents and $1,200
increase for out-of-state students.
Senior in-state student Matt Compton says tuition increases every year are
unnecessary.
“The first thing that we have to do for both in-state and out-of-state
students is lock tuition in over the course of a student’s career,” said.
Compton. “That gives parents a chance to plan with their kids what they’re
going to have to pay through the entire four years.”
The board also agreed to raise student fees by 5.2 percent, including a $50
increase in athletic fees.
Althletics director Dick Baddour says these increases are necessary to meet
UNC-CH's changing needs.
