Students Running for Awareness
by Erin Macbeth

More than 400 runners got an early start Saturday morning at the Franklin Street five-kilometer run.
The annual event is coordinated by the Zeta Tau Alpha sorority. Proceeds benefit the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. Runners and volunteers wore pink ribbons in memory of breast cancer victims.

“They say that one in six women will be diagnosed with breast cancer, and so it affects everyone,” said Leigh Brown, race coordinator. “I feel like everyone can say they’ve had a family member or a friend, or a friend’s family member who has been affected by breast cancer, so I feel like it’s extremely important.”

Spectators showed runners their support along the course. After the race, participants enjoyed music and refreshments provided by local sponsors.

This is the 16th year for the race. This year’s event raised more than $24,000.
