Women’s Gymnastics Teams Up with Rival
by Tyree Barnette

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and bitter rival North Carolina State University teamed up against the University of Maryland and Towson University in the 10th annual Governor's Cup Carmichael Auditorium.

The Heels left their mark on the vault with junior Courtney Bumpers taking first place. But the ladies couldn't keep their “Heels” on the balance beam and fell to third in the event.

Luckily, senior Olivia Trusty nailed a 9.9 on the uneven bars, which was her second highest score ever. And three ladies tied for second place on the floor as the Heels clinched first in that event. Trusty says success comes from practicing just like they're in a meet.

“Derek has had us just doing repetitions in the gym, and so that's been really helpful to just keep on going through them and pretending like we're in a meet every single day,” Trusty said. “And so that helps you to just transfer that from the gym to the meet and do the same thing in the meet.”

UNC-CH won the first place trophy for the third straight time and for the fourth time in five years. Together, Carolina and N.C. State beat the two Maryland schools to keep the trophy here in North Carolina.
