FDA Expands Drug-Tracking Role

The Food and Drug Administration is expanding its watch after several agency-approved drugs have been linked to heart attacks and strokes.

Makers of the arthritis medication Vioxx pulled the drug off the market in September, but the FDA is drawing heat for not monitoring the painkiller more closely after its approval.

A new Drug Safety Oversight Board will track the effect of drugs that are already on the market and provide doctors and patients with any new information on health risks and benefits.
