Proposes Out-of-State Tuition Increase
by Mary L. McGuirt
Tuition is a hot topic on UNC-Chapel Hill’s
campus, and it was one of the key topics
in Gov. Easley’s State of the State
address.
University students, leaders and faculty members have debated the issue.
The
UNC System Board of Governors recently decided to support a plan that will
keep in-state tuition the same, but increase out-of-state tuition by $950.
Out-of-state students are protesting, but Easley says he supports the plan
because it doesn’t raise tuition for North Carolina residents.
“I commend the BOG for their support,” said Easley. “[In-state]
tuition cannot go up every single year. And it will not go up in my budget.”
The BOG has until its March meeting to pass the increases, which will then
go before the North Carolina General Assembly.
