Season Starts off on Right Foot
by Tyree Barnette
Graceful movements. Looks of confidence.
Amazing athleticism. These terms describe
UNC-CH’s
gymnastics team. The gymnasts, however, think
of their sport in other ways.
"Gymnastics is very mental,” said
senior Olivia Trusty. “You have to
concentrate on everything; you just
can't rush through it. And after you hit
it, it's really exciting."
Trusty said her teammates sweat it out four
hours a day, four days a week in Fetzer
Gymnasium. These practices are about improving
weaknesses, working on technique, and enhancing
presentation for the meets. Trusty says it’s
the little things that may need the most
improvement.
"We have to be more artistic in our
dance on the floor--tighter legs, pointed
toes, just little detailed stuff,” said
Trusty.
The floor event, which comes at the end
of each meet, combines choreographed dancing
with graceful gymnastics.
The gymnasts have each other’s support,
along with the dedication, to go far this
season.
