Ticket Prices May Rise
by Lindsey Ellerson
The Town Council is taking another look
at putting a luxury tax on event tickets.
If the council passes the tax, basketball,
football and theatre tickets will increase by $1. The tax would only apply
to tickets costing $30 or more.
Supporters say the revenue would help public
transit by providing some financial
relief for both the University and the town.
But University officials have opposed the
idea in the past, claiming it may
hurt ticket sales. Long-time Chapel Hill
resident and former Town Council member Roland
Giduz disagrees.
“Putting another dollar on is not
going to affect the sale of these tickets
in any way because they are all on a seller’s
market at this time,” Giduz said. “People
are
clamoring to buy tickets right now.”
The General Assembly would have to approve
any new luxury tax. The Town
Council will meet with Orange County legislators
on Friday to discuss the proposal.
