Faculty Voice Concern over Potential Donation
by Lindsey Ellerson
Members of the UNC-CH faculty are accusing
administrators of being disrespectful by
holding secret meetings with a potential
donor.
Seventy-one faculty members expressed their
distrust in a letter to the Daily Tar Heel
on Tuesday.
The Pope Foundation and the University have
been working together to create a Western
Cultures program in the curriculum.
The faculty members are speaking out, saying the University negotiated with
the donor behind their backs. Many professors fear that if the foundation gives
to UNC-CH, the Pope family will have curricular control.
Provost Robert Shelton says that is not true.
“The College Dean has had an open forum in which this was discussed,” Shelton
said. “And we absolutely won’t accept a gift that puts any constraints
on academic freedom here at UNC.”
The faculty who signed the letter insist the University stop negotiation with
the donor until the administration addresses these concerns.
