Teams Receive High Marks
Students aren't the only ones getting graded
nowadays.
The NCAA released its own report card this week, grading the academic progress
of student-athletes at every university. Of the 328 Division I schools, about
half have at least one team that could risk losing scholarships next season.
Under the NCAA's guidelines, teams are graded on a 1,000-point scale. All teams are expected to score a 925 or better and can lose points when athletes
transfer, drop out, leave early for the professional ranks, or become academically
ineligible.
UNC-CH's overall score was relatively high at 970, and it had seven teams with
perfect scores, including men's basketball, field hockey and volleyball. The
only Tar Heel squads with grades lower than 925 were the Wrestling and men's
golf teams, but those teams won't be penalized as their scores are expected
to rise.
