| Town
Council Discusses Gay Marriage
by Lily West
The Chapel Hill Town Council decided it
would be prudent not to ask the state legislative
delegation to seek repeal of the controversial
Defense of Marriage Act.
At a meeting between state and local lawmakers, Councilman Mark Kleinschmidt
told his state counterparts he has faith they will reflect the town's sentiments.
“That doesn't necessarily mean that you go and file a bill to repeal the
DOMA tomorrow,” Kleinschmidt said. “But what it does is…give
you some political cover to do the right thing on this amendment issue.”
Kleinschmidt is referring to a constitutional amendment that would make marriage
a union only between a woman and a man. The Town Council will discuss this
issue further at its meeting Monday night. Hundreds of Defense of Marriage
Act supporters are expected to show up to voice
their opinions. |
