Might Toss Alcohol Cap
by Mary L.McGuirt
If
you're heading out to the bars, your drinks
might soon become a bit stronger, thanks to
a local not-for-profit group. The group, Pop
the Cap, wants to get rid of the six percent
alcohol-content cap on all malt beverages made
in or imported to North Carolina.
It's gotten support from the North Carolina House of Representatives and local
bar workers who say removing the cap would help the state's revenue.
Matt Hodler, general manager of the Carolina Coffee Shop supports the effort.
“The state is losing money,” Hodler said. “People are going
just across the border to Virginia to get the ‘six point zero’ beers
they really like.”
North Carolina is one of only five states with the cap. Mill owners pushed for
the cap in 1935 because they were worried workers might not show up for their
jobs on Mondays.
