Consider Campus Traffic Solutions
by Natasha Vukelic
UNC-Chapel Hill officials hope to reduce
traffic by listening to the advice of a national
expert in transportation and campus communities.
Monday, Dr. Spenser Havlick spoke to an audience
at UNC-CH about techniques to manage traffic
congestion. Part of Havlick’s recommendation
is for the University to find incentives
that encourage students to find alternatives
to driving cars.
UNC-CH has already created the Commuter Alternatives
Program, which encourages alternate forms
of transportation, including walking, bicycling,
and carpooling.
Havlick said that reducing traffic congestion is important for the future.
“You look down in the next 10, 15, or 20 years, and the place is going
to be overrun with cars,” said Havlick. “And cars, for the most part,
are not very healthy. They pollute; they make noise; they fill space that should
be used for other valuable purposes.”
