| Women's
Basketball Wins ACC Title
by Anne Sexton
After
the men's basketball team beat Duke for the
first time on Sunday, the women's basketball
team had a chance to rip on the Lady Blue Devils
for the third time
this season and claim the ACC tournament title.
UNC-CH hit the court with a purpose Monday night, but it took the Tar Heels a
while to warm up. They missed shots and let Duke's Monique Curry grab the first
10 points.
Then Ivory Latta broke a three-minute drought, putting the Heels on a tear with
Carolina hitting three-pointer after three-pointer. They left Duke a little frustrated,
as UNC led 40-35 at the end of the first half.
In the second half, Erlana Larkins showed size doesn't matter as she scored over
6-foot-7-inch Alison Bales.
Then Carolina decided to spice up its "threes," as La-Tangela Atkinson
hit her second of the night, and one of the Heels' 10 three-pointers for the
game.
After tourney MVP Ivory Latta put the Heels up by more than 20 points, Carolina
said goodbye to last year's champs and hello to the Heels' first tournament title
since 1998. The final score was 88-67.
