Two-Thirds of College Students Report Harassment
By Hanna A. Gordola

Has someone ever made a sexual comment to you that made you feel uncomfortable? A recent study by the American Association of University Women found that you’re not alone.

It found that nearly two-thirds of college students, both men and women, have experienced sexual harassment. Most of these are non-contact interactions. This includes remarks, gestures or jokes.

The study also found that more than 30 percent of college students said they’ve been victims of physical sexual harassment such as being touched, grabbed or pinched in a sexual way.

Senior Stephanie Wheeler said she’s had her fair share of getting physically sexually harassed, especially when she goes out to a dance clubs with her friends. And it’s the physical harassment that really bothers her, not so much the verbal kind.

"They just come up behind you and start grinding on you,” Wheeler said. “And I don't know. It kind of makes me feel weird. It makes me feel I have the need to get away. And I try to get people to rescue me."

If you’ve experience sexual harassment and need to talk to someone, contact one of the University’s counselors at http://caps.unc.edu/. You can also call (919) 966-3658.

If you’ve been a victim of sexual assault, you can go to http://shs.unc.edu/library/sexassault.html to find a list of links that will route you to the proper authorities and resources.
