Professor One of Three Pedestrians Killed Last Week
By Philip Jones

The UNC-Chapel Hill community is still grieving for a psychology professor and two other pedestrians killed on Chapel Hill roads last week.

Professor David Galinski, 71, died at the intersection of Highway 15-501 and Manning Drive last Wednesday night.

He was crossing the busy four-lane highway to get to a Carolina basketball game.

Chapel Hill police spokeswoman Jane Cousins said more pedestrians died on Chapel Hill roads last week than in the past six years. But she said that drivers and pedestrians don’t need to be afraid when getting around Chapel Hill.

“We want people to be alert. We want people to be cognizant. We want people to think about the fact that there could be somebody on a bike, or in another car, maybe not obeying all the rules,” Cousins said. “We want people to be alert, but not afraid.”

The driver of the car that hit Galinski won’t be charged.

Be sure to tune in to Carolina Week on Wednesday, when we'll take an in-depth look at pedestrian safety in Chapel Hill.
