Job Candidates May Be Sending Wrong Message
By Crystal Calloway

Celebrities aren't the only ones who need to be careful of their public image. Students should be cautious, too.

Voicemails and e-mail addresses can be funny and cute to your friends, but they might not send the same message to potential employers.

Internship and job candidates should also beware that some employers are doing internet searches.

Marcia Harris, director of Career Services, says this means students should be careful what pictures and comments they post on Web sites such as Facebook and My Space.

Harris says students should not post “messages that talk about drug use and alcohol use.”

“Sometimes I think students put those messages on just to be funny, and they may not even necessarily be a drug user or a heavy alcohol user,” Harris said.

Harris adds that posting inappropriate material may influence an employer's impression of you and harm your chances of receiving a job offer.
