Congress Resolution Postponed
By Ciji Dodds

Just last month a group called Student Action with Workers demonstrated in Lenoir Dining Hall in support of a union for employees. It’s something that Julius West, vice president of the Black Student Movement and student congress member, is very passionate about

“There’s a general atmosphere between the workers and supervisors where workers feel that they’re not respected and they do not feel safe,” West said.

Unionization isn’t a new subject for the University. It’s been at the center of controversy for the past year.

Recently Aramark, one of the largest employers on campus, has been accused of exploiting non-English-speaking workers and maintaining a hostile work environment. Aramark adamantly denies these charges.

Congress heard testimony from representatives of all sides, including the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Margaret Jablonski and Tim Stallman of Student Action with Workers.

Speaker Luke Farley vocalized his concerns.

The implications of, specifically if Congress passes this resolution is simply going to be whether another arm, or branch of student government becomes involved in the fight for workers rights on campus,” Farley said.

Student Congress voted to postpone the vote until members know more details.
