Residents Get Help with Bills
By Paula Cerutti

Residents of Hillsborough might get some help paying their water bills. The Orange County Congregations in Mission and the town have set up a new water-assistance program for people who need help with the expensive utility costs.

Hillsborough commissioner Mike Gering said the town has some of the highest water rates in the region, and some people simply can’t afford to pay them. Through the program, individuals can get up to $100 during a six-month period to pay their bills.

Initially the town contributed $5,000, but the long-term success of the program depends on contributions from residents.

Gering also said that sometimes something as simple as a utility bill can push a family over the edge to homelessness.

Customers who have problems paying their water bill should call the county's Department of Social Services. Also, the phone number for the nearest pastor in a mission church is 245-2800.
