County Water Levels Rise, but Drought Still a Threat
by Michael Abramowitz

Water levels in area lakes are up to 91 percent capacity, but Orange County is still listed as a moderate drought area by the North Carolina Drought Management Advisory Council.

Conditions have improved since November, when county reservoirs were at 56 percent capacity. And Orange Water and Sewer Authority spokesman Greg Feller says it appears that the water supply will be adequate for the rest of this year.

Feller says if you need a reason to conserve water, just do the math.

“For many people, a little bit of math shows that if you save water, you save dollars,” Feller says. “It’s always a good idea to conserve, and that’s also part of our message to the community.”

With continued conservation and some welcome rain, the drought could be over soon, but OWASA knows you can’t always predict what nature will do.
