Inn Provides Welcoming Atmosphere
By Sarah Wiles
The Carolina Inn, sometimes referred to as “the
University’s living room,” is owned
by the school and is located right across the
street from campus.
Margaret Skinner, director of public relations
for the inn, explains how the hotel’s
profits directly benefit students.
"…What is left over goes to the
university specifically to benefit the University
library and specifically the North Carolina
Collection," Skinner said.
The inn was built in 1924 and is listed as
one of America’s historical hotels. The
top-notch accommodations and inviting atmosphere
attract a variety of guests.
People from all over the world come to stay
at the Carolina Inn, including business travelers,
alumni and even honeymooners.
Gregg Hilker, director of operations, says
alumni love coming back to stay.
"Alumni probably make up about 60 percent
of our business,” Hilker said. “[They’re]
probably the bulk of our activities here, with
everything from weddings just to coming back
for a football game or basketball game."
And the hotel remains a favorite spot for relaxing
and soaking up the best Chapel Hill has to offer.
Skinner remembers her first time staying at
the Carolina Inn: “the most was fun was
getting up in the morning and getting some coffee
and just being really laid back and leisurely,
and this hotel does make you feel that way."
