Campus Group Protests Genocide
By Kelsey Richards

Remembering six million Jews who died in the Holocaust is important to members of the North Carolina Hillel. Students associated with the Hillel began reading names of victims Wednesday at noon and will continue reading for 24 hours.

This year the Hillel is working with Students United for Darfur Awareness Now to remind people that genocide is still happening around the world.

The groups represented the one-point-five million children killed in the Holocaust with a display of pennies, so students are better able to grasp the large number. One of the event organizers, Lisa Estrin, remembering the Holocaust is very important to her.

“All of my grandparents are survivors of the Holocaust, and they were all pretty much children when it happened, and because they were so strong, and they survived, I’m here today,” Estrin said.

Holocaust Remembrance Week will continue through Friday.
