Morehead Seniors Reflect on What Scholarship Means
By Paula Cerutti

The Morehead scholarship is worth about $80,000 during four years of college. Some Morehead scholars have traveled to Ghana to organize soccer tournaments, to New York City to lead recreational therapy classes for people living with HIV and to Peru to work on environment problems.

“The Morehead is a lot more than a just a scholarship it's all about a challenge, about leadership and passion,” said Megan Mazziocchi. For example, every summer the Morehead foundation offers different extracurricular activities to its scholars.

Brandon Ho and Emily Vasquez are two Morehead scholars graduating this spring, and they have used their time at Carolina to make a difference.

During his second year, Ho worked in Brazil teaching English classes to children in local schools. He also traveled to Europe to study art and is the president of the Black Student Movement at UNC

Vasquez traveled to Asia to study food and the change in the nutrition habits of people who have moved from a rural space to an urban place. Vazquez studied abroad in Argentina and was a writer for The Daily Tar Heel

“The Morehead is all about learning the experience,” Ho said. “They provide the resourses and the knowledge and the expertise to help you to step out of that cover zone, experience the world you never could imagine.”

Vasquez agrees that the scholarship can be life-changing. “It's tons of experiences (that) are really rich, and you are going to come out a better person with a broader outlook no matter what.”
