Tar Heels Fight to Stay Alive against Maryland
By Loreal Andrews

The Terrapins were ready to do it again.

The Carolina women’s basketball team went head-to-head against Maryland at the NCAA Championships in Boston.

Earlier in the season Maryland served UNC its only loss on the season – and Sunday night, they were hoping to send the Heels packing for a second time.

The Heels, ranked higher and favored to win, started the contest with a balanced effort. Despite a scare when All-American guard Ivory Latta was carried off the court with a knee injury, the Heels went into the locker room only down by a bucket, 36-34.

Terp post players Laura Harper and Crystal Langhorne led the way against the Heels. Combined, the two scored 47 points, which was more than half of Maryland’s total points at the end of the game.

The battle raged between the conference rivals, especially after Maryland guard Shay Doron was charged with an offensive foul in front of head coach Brenda Freeze and the Terrapin bench.

Although the Heels looked prime to stage a comeback after senior Jessica Sell and freshman Alex Miller hit two crucial threes, it was too little, too late. The rally stalled after the brief surge, and the Heels fell apart.

The Tar Heels lost the contest against the Maryland. The final score was 81-70.
