Sports Info Office Plays Unsung Role in UNC Sports
By Loreal Andrews

Carolina has a legacy of success and integrity in sports. But the people who make it happen practically go unnoticed, despite the fact that they probably have the largest impact on how the world sees the University and its sports.

The Office of Athletic Communication, often referred to as “sports info,” is the factory that has made Carolina sports what it’s known for today. Steve Kirschner, the head sports information director, leads the operation to share Tar Heel sports with the world. But Carolina’s popularity brings responsibility, as the public has high expectations for Carolina athletics.

"Not only do they want us to be successful competitively, but they also want us to do it the right way – with class, with integrity, play within the rules," he said.

The creation of tarheelblue.com in 2004 not only made UNC Athletics more available, but it helped to brand the University into global consciousness.

Last year the site recorded more hits than any other college sports Web site in the country. A lot of the popularity had to do with the men’s basketball team winning the NCAA National Championship in St. Louis last year.

The office also maintains all the records, pictures and media associated with all the sports in UNC’s history.

Once a student intern in the Office of Athletic Communications, Bobby Hundley, who is now the sports information director for track, volleyball and softball, says the hard work-little praise job is still worth it to him.

"I think a lot of us in here wouldn't even do this if it wasn't at Carolina just because we've got a passion for Carolina that you really don't have to work at, it's there no matter what" Hundley said.

Dan Findlay, senior student assistant in the office, cherishes the relationships he has made while working in the office.

"As a Carolina student, I came out here from Colorado because of my love for sports,” Findlay said. “It's nice to find and work with people with a similar love for the University and the athletic programs here. So, the people have been great. I love them all, so I'd have to say that's my favorite part about my job."
