Frisbee Golf Becoming Popular
By Will Johnson
Deep in the woods of Chapel Hill, students
from UNC are playing an uncommon sport.
Instead of using golf balls and clubs, they
fly discs on an 18-hole Frisbee golf course
located at the outdoor recreation center.
Frisbee golf is similar in structure to ordinary
golf rules. Players must throw the disc from
tee areas marked with wooden posts. A player
wins a hole if he or she hits the metal basket
with the fewest number of throws.
Unlike a normal Frisbee, the type used for
this golf game is shorter and smaller so it
can fly longer distances.
Daniel Andres and some of his close friends
frequently play Frisbee golf for its social
appeal.
Andres says that Frisbee golf is “a great
hobby of mine. I like to get some sun out here,
go to the woods, and see some friends. It’s
great.”
In order to dodge obstacles such as murky lakes
and tall shrubbery, players utilize certain
maneuvers to bypass them.
“If I get caught in an obstacle, I use
the tomahawk,” says Andres. “The
Frisbee can then go between the trees.”
Even though at times it’s easy to lose
a Frisbee, the sport is becoming more popular
due to its ease of learning how to play.
