Town Considers Naming Plaza for Civil Rights Leaders
By Loreal Andrews

Most people who pass the Franklin Street post office would never know that at one time activists spent countless hours there fighting for civil rights. But that could
soon change after the Chapel Hill Town Council holds a public hearing about naming the plaza after local civil rights leaders.

Chapel Hill heroes Joe and Lucy Straley and Charlotte Adams were famous for collecting signatures, staging protests and holding vigils at the site in the past. Joe Straley and Adams died last year.

Town officials don't want this legacy to be forgotten.

A meeting will be held Monday night at 7 p.m. to get community feedback on the plans. The town’s naming committee supports the idea.
