Apple Chill to Have More Security this Year
By Maggie Faust

With Apple Chill right around the corner, Chapel Hill officials are beefing up security for what they believe will be the biggest turnout ever for the event.

Chapel Hill Police plan to double their forces this year to more than 300 police officers.

The increase will cost the department about $60,000, considerably cheaper than both Halloween and Final Four weekend celebrations.

Police Chief Gregg Jarvies says his squad also plans to move people out of the street earlier this year and hopes their plan won’t cause any problems.

“We try to keep the mood of the crowd such that even when we are intervening, we don’t force the issue, and if the crowds get hostile, we back off,” Jarvies said.

The Apple Chill festival will go from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. this Sunday. Vendors will be packed up by 7:30 p.m., at which point crews will begin clearing the streets. Officials plan to have the streets open to traffic by 9 p.m.
